William George Glassford (SN 4508) born in Ballarat, was a 19 year old farm hand when he enlisted in Ballarat on August 25th 1915. Attached to the 8th Infantry Battalion he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Themistocles on January 28th 1916. While in Egypt he was transferred to the 58th Battalion before moving to France in June. In November 1916 he was evacuated to England suffering from bronchitis and pleurisy, but while there was diagnosed with another disease and was unable to rejoin his unit in France until June 1917. He saw out the remainder of the war without major incident and returned to Australia on the Orontes, disembarking at Melbourne on June 28th 1919. He was discharged on August 22nd 1919.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as William G. Glasford.
