Biography

William Ernest Doherty (SN 4788) was born at Bairnsdale and was a 44 year old married cook when he enlisted in Melbourne on August 27th 1915. Initially attached to the 14th Infantry Battalion he embarked on March 14th 1916 aboard the Anchises. He commenced his battlefield service with the 46th Battalion but was then transferred to the 12th Light Trench Mortar Battery. Throughout his service he was troubled by scabies and impetigo. Sickness and age led to him being returned to Australia on transport duty in mid-1918.
