Thomas Joseph Ryan (SN 98) was born in Ballarat East, and was a 22 year old labourer when he enlisted on 18th August 1914. He was allocated to the 8th Infantry Battalion but after a period of absence without leave he was discharged in Albany on October 31st. He re-enlisted on September 29th 1915 (SN 2491), now married, and reached France in March 1916 to serve with the 24th Infantry Battalion. During the fighting at Pozieres on 22nd August 1916 he was killed in action. He has no known grave, and his name is listed on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
His brother Frank also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
