James Joseph Flanagan (SN 361) born in Melbourne, was a 29 year old teacher with the Western Australian Education Department when he enlisted in Melbourne on September 13th 1915. Assigned to the 1st Australian remount Unit he embarked aboard the Orsova on November 12th, bound for Egypt. It appears that he had difficulty adjusting to military life. In April 1916 he was transferred to the Postal Corps before being returned to Australia on the Karoola. He was discharged as ‘medically unfit, melancholia’ on October 10th 1916.
