Biography

Harold Barber (SN 139) was born at Dunolly and attended the Betley State School. It seems he had worked both as a grocer and a motor mechanic by the time he enlisted as an 18-year-old on August 24th 1914. He sailed with the first Anzac fleet on October 19th aboard the Benalla. He served with the 8th Battalion at Gallipoli until jaundice forced his evacuation in August 1915. He reached France in late March 1916 but at Pozieres on July 25th he was killed instantly when he received a gunshot wound to the head. He was 20 years of age. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux.
