Kevin Joseph Coghlan was born in Ballarat and was a Student at the School of Mines when he enlisted in the 10th Field Ambulance on 31 July 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A54 Runic on 20 June 1916. After a short period in England he moved to France in November 1916 attached to the 10th Field Ambulance. In September 1917 he transferred to the 3rd Division Supply Column as a driver. Aside from being disciplined for leaving his ambulance unattended, it seems he came through the war without significant injury or illness. He returned to Australia in mid-1919 on the Devanha.
