Biography

Patrick William Bennington (SN 2102) born at Happy Valley, was a 35 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on October 18th 1915. On April 7th 1916 he embarked on the Barunga and sailed to Egypt where he would serve with the 8th Light Horse Regiment and the Imperial Camel Corps. In April 1917 he was wounded at Gaza, suffering a gunshot wound to his right leg, then in March 1918 it was a gunshot wound to his shoulder. He returned to Australia aboard the Dunluce Castle, disembarked at Melbourne on August 26th 1919 and was discharged on October 18th.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as William P. Bennington.
