Biography

Walter Scott Richards was born in Ballarat and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 29th Battalion, 1st Reinforcement on 25 October 1915 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 10 November 1915. He made his way to France where on August 16th 1916 he was wounded in action. A gunshot wound to his leg forced his evacuation to the Warncliffe War Hospital in England. On August 28th he joined the 29th Battalion in France. On October 12th 1918, a month before the Armistice, he was transferred to the 32nd Battalion and saw out the final weeks of the war. He returned home on the Wyreema and disembarked at Melbourne on May 31st 1919.
