Biography

John McDonald (SN 164) was born in Blowhard and enlisted in Ballarat on August 24th 1914. The 27 year old, unmarried labourer sailed with the 8th Infantry Battalion in October on board the Benalla as part of the first Anzac contingent, bound for Egypt and Gallipoli. On May 8th 1915 he was killed in action at Krithia, south of Anzac Cove, but his body was never recovered and his name is listed on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey
