Samuel Knight (SN 4814) was born in Creswick and enlisted in Ballarat on November 15th 1915. He was 21 years old, unmarried and a blacksmith. With the 6th Infantry Battalion, he departed from Melbourne on board the Wiltshire in March 1916 but on arrival in Egypt was transferred to the 58th Battalion with which he landed in France in June. Barely three weeks later, he was killed in action at Fromelles on July 19th 1916. He has no known grave, and his name appears on the VC Corner Australian Memorial, Fromelles, France.
