Biography

Thomas Matthew Tournier was born in Ballarat and was a Bricklayer by trade when he enlisted in the 6th Battalion, 16th Reinforcement on 16 November 1915 at the age of 38. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A23 Suffolk on 1 April 1916, reaching Plymouth in June 1916 to join the 6th Battalion. Just a month later he was admitted to hospital suffering from epilepsy and it was decided he should be returned home for discharge. He left England in October 1916 on the Ajana and returned to Australia.
