Allan Payne (SN 268) born in Ballarat, was a 21 year old jeweller when he enlisted in Ballarat on August 24th 1914. Assigned to the 8th Infantry Battalion, he embarked aboard the Benalla on October 19th and sailed to Egypt. He then served at Gallipoli from the landing on April 25th 1915 until August when illness forced his evacuation. Once recovered he rejoined his unit and moved to France in March 1916. In July he suffered a severe gunshot wound to his shoulder and was evacuated to England before being returned to Australia. He returned aboard the Ulysses and was discharged medically unfit on May 24th 1917.
