Biography

James Joseph West was born in Avenel, VIC and was a Farrier and General Blacksmith in Ballarat when he enlisted in the 8th Light Horse Regiment, 15th Reinforcement on 27 November 1915 at the age of 36. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A43 Barunga on 7 April 1916 to serve with the 4th Light Horse Regiment. In November, while in Egypt, he was posted to the Australian Camel Training Unit. In May 1918 he contracted malaria which rendered him æmedically unfit' and he departed Suez in January 1919 aboard the Demosthenes to return to Australia.
