Biography

Thomas Sandwith was born in Ballarat East and was a Carter by trade when he enlisted in the 5th Battalion, 15th Reinforcement on 7 December 1915 at the age of 24. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on 7 March 1916. In April he was transferred to the 12th Field Artillery Brigade and in June he moved to France. In October 1918 he was gassed and evacuated to the 2nd Auxiliary Hospital at Southall in England. He returned home on the Port Napier, disembarking at Melbourne on July 2nd 1919.
