Biography

Sydney Vivian Wade (SN 4951) was born at Rocky Lead and attended the local state school. He was a labourer when he enlisted on December 18th 1915, declaring himself to be 18 years of age. He was allocated to the 59th Infantry Battalion and embarked for active service in March 1916. On July 26th 1916 he died of wounds received in the fighting at Pozieres, and is buried in the Calais Southern Cemetery, France. It was subsequently discovered that he was just 17 years of age at the time of his death.
