Born in Ballarat, Grenville, Victoria and a Fishmonger by occupation, Lawrence Braybrook was 18 years and single when enlisted on the 20th of December 1915 in the 8th Battalion, 16th Reinforcement, Australian Imperial Force, with the rank of Private, Number 5049. His Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A23 'Suffolk' on the 1st of April 1916. On the 20th of October 1916 transferred to England wounded; on the 20th of March 1919 proceeded to England for return to Australia. On the 12th of May 1919 embarked for Australia and was listed as returned to Australia per H.T. 'Soudan' on the 12th of May 1919. Disembarked at Melbourne and on the 13th of August 1919 discharged at Melbourne with the termination of period of enlistment.
