David Charles Walker was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and am art teacher when he enlisted with the October 1916 Reinforcements on 21 December 1915 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board SS Port Napier on 17 November 1916. He marched in to the Australian Army Medical Corps Trailing Depot before proceeding overseas to France. On 30 January 1917 was admitted to the No. 7 French Army Military Medical Corp, nursing spinal meningitis. He re-joined his unit, but on 9 June 1918 was hospitalised for influenza. He returned to Australia on 16 July 1919.
