William Stanley Sampson was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and an Ironmoulder when he enlisted in the Army Medical Corps, Special Reinforcements on 6 July 1915 at the age of 26. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A63 Karoola on 7 March 1916. On 20 April 1916, whilst in France, he was wounded in action with a severe gunshot wound to the left ankle. Subsequently, he was invalided to England and on 5 November 1917 he returned to Australia aboard the Themistocles.
