Biography

John Alfred Wunhym was born in Ballarat East and enlisted there on January 4th 1916. He was 19, single and a labourer when he joined the 5th Infantry Battalion. He embarked in March 1916 aboard the Wiltshire, joining the 58th Battalion in April. The following year saw him in and out of hospital on several occasions with pleurisy and other ailments. The 58th Battalion moved into the front line trenches in the Gueudecourt area, and on March 26th 1917 Private Wunhym was killed in action. His name is recorded on Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
