Biography

Frederick Percival Lancelot Bawden (SN 5031) was born in Bendigo but educated at the Sebastopol State School and the Ballarat School of Mines. He was a 28-year-old assayer when he enlisted on January 8th 1916. On April 1st 1916 he embarked aboard the Suffolk to serve with the 8th Battalion. and reached France in June. In early January 1917 he was hospitalised for a few days with blistered feet then later in the month he was evacuated to hospital in England suffering from burns to his feet. He rejoined his unit in France in June 1917 before its move north to Belgium. On October 4th 1917 he was killed in action in the fierce fighting at Broodseinde Ridge, Passchendaele. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium. He was 30 years of age.
