Biography

Martin Stephens (SN 3315) born in Melbourne, was a 20 year old, single, engineer living in Barkly Street when he enlisted February 2nd 1916. He embarked from Melbourne on board the Berrima in July, and joined the 39th Infantry Battalion in France in November. In early February 1917 he was withdrawn from the battlefield and returned to England suffering from deafness. Further assessment determined he was no longer fit for active service, so he was returned to Australia aboard the Persic, disembarking at Melbourne on February 12th 1918. He was discharged as medically unfit on March 30th 1918.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Martin Stevens.

One of a number of soldiers with multiple entries in the original register, he is also recognised at Tree 3928.
