Herman Frederick Bush (SN 398) was born in Ballarat and enlisted there on January 17th 1916. A 21 year old insurance inspector, he was assigned to the 39th Infantry Battalion where he was quickly promoted to Corporal and then Lance Sergeant before embarking from Melbourne on the Ascanius in May that year. Promoted to a full Sergeant in November, his unit was posted to France where he served until he was killed in action during the opening battle for Messines on June 7th 1917. He has no known grave but his name is recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium.
