Herman Frederick Bush enlisted on 17th January 1916 when he was 22 years old, single and working in Ballarat as an Insurance Inspector. He was allocated to the 39th Infantry Battalion, with the Regimental No. of 398. During his service he was promoted to Sergeant. He was killed in action during the opening battle for Messines. His name is recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial, at Ypres, Belgium.
