William Howard Johnson (SN 5128) born at Ballarat, was an 18 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on January 20th 1916. On April 1st he embarked aboard the Suffolk and sailed to Egypt where he continued to train. Assigned to the 58th Infantry Battalion he reached France in September. Several bouts of illness interrupted his service until it was decided he should return to Australia. He was returned home aboard the Themistocles, disembarked at Melbourne on April 6th 1917 and was discharged ‘medically unfit, myalgia’ on August 7th.
