Charles Walter Murray was born in Ballarat and was a Moulder dresser by trade when he enlisted in the 8th Battalion, 16th Reinforcement on 24 January 1916 at the age of 35. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A23 Suffolk on 1 April 1916. After a period of hospitalisation in England he was returned to Australia in September 1917 suffering from osteo-arthritis in the left hip. On November 11th, 1917, exactly a year before the end of the war, he was assessed as medically unfit for service and subsequently discharged.
