Biography

Alexander Ferguson was born in Lexton, VIC and living in Ballarat as a Pastry Cook when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, B Company on 21 January 1916 at the age of 40. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. In September 1917 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Cook, but at the same time was being debilitated by rheumatism. In early November 1918 he was returned to Australia aboard the Hospital Transport Gaika, arriving in Melbourne on December 28th. Shortly after, he was discharged, on the grounds of æpremature senility'.
