Alexander Ferguson (SN 450) born in Lexton, was a 40 year old pastry cook when he enlisted in Ballarat on January 21st 1916. Assigned to the 39th Battalion his unit embarked from Melbourne aboard the Ascanius on May 27th 1916. In September 1917 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Cook, but at the same time was being debilitated by rheumatism. In early November 1918 he was returned to Australia aboard the Hospital Transport Gaika, arriving in Melbourne on December 29th. He was discharged on October 6th 1919 ‘premature senility'.
