Jack Owen was born in Beaufort, VIC and was a Labourer in Ballarat South when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, D Company on 22 March 1916 at the age of 32. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. He transferred to the 8th Infantry Battalion in France on 29 December 1916. His record shows no serious injury but he did return to Hospital with illness throughout 1918 before returning home aboard the HS Kanowna on 28 August 1919.
