Biography

Albert Edward Thomas was born in Egerton, Victoria, was single and a Labourer when he enlisted from Ballarat with the 8th Battalion, 14th Reinforcement on 2 July 1915 at the age of 20. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 28 January 1916. According to his records he suffered a mild gunshot wound to the forehead on 17 July 1916. He was subsequently transferred to a series of hospitals before finally being discharged to re-join his unit in France from the 5th D Base Depot on 1 January 1917. However, he was almost immediately returned to England, suffering from shell shock, and returned to Australia aboard the HT 82 in August 1917.
