Biography

William George Thomas Smith (SN 5226) was born in Ballarat but attended Port MacDonnell State School in South Australia. On January 24th 1916 he enlisted in Ballarat. He was 34 years old, employed as a labourer, and married to Claressa. He was posted to the 8th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne in April 1916 on board the Suffolk. In August 1918 he was wounded in action during the fighting in the Lihons area, France, and evacuated to hospital in England where he died of his wounds on August 13th 1918. He is buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey, UK.
