Biography

James Frederick George Pickles was born in London, England and was a Motor Driver from Raglan Street, North Ballarat when he enlisted in the 8th Battalion, 16th Reinforcement on 24 January 1916 at the age of 20. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A23 Suffolk on 1 April 1916. He was transferred to the military hospital in York on 24 August 1916 for a severe gunshot wound to the shoulder and thigh. He was able to recover and re-joined his unit from Wounded on 18 January 1917. Aside from a bout of illness which saw him back in the hospital in June 1918, Pickles completed his tour without further significant incident, illness or injury. He received his final discharge orders on 5 April 1920.
