Biography

Gordon Crocker (SN 83), a 27 year old accountant from Errard Street, Ballarat, was amongst those who joined the AIF soon after the outbreak of war, enlisting on August 24th 1914. He sailed in October with the 8th Battalion, on the Benalla, first to Egypt then on to Gallipoli. Promoted to Sergeant in May 1915, he was mortally wounded on July 28th 1915, suffering a shrapnel wound to the head. 28 years of age at his death, he is buried in Beach Cemetery at the southern end of Anzac Cove just a short distance from the grave of John Simpson, ‘the man with the donkey’.

His brother, Eustace, also served in the AIF and was killed in action in Bullecourt in 1917.
