Walter Bisgrove Smith (SN 5228) born in Ballarat, was a 23 year old striker when he enlisted in Ballarat on February 7th 1916. He embarked aboard the Suffolk on April 1st, first to England then in August to France to serve with the 8th Infantry Battalion. His service was interrupted by health issues, and he was returned to Australia aboard the Pakheaand discharged on November 24th 1917 ‘medically unfit, chronic gastritis’.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Walter D. Smith.
