Donald McMillan was born in Swan Hill, VIC and was a Grocer living in Mt Pleasant when he enlisted in the 6th Battalion, 16th Reinforcement on 24 January 1916 at the age of 28. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A23 Suffolk on 1 April 1916. In October 1916 he was attached to the 59th Battalion which was rebuilding after the disaster at Fromelles. He was only with the 59th for three months before being transferred to the 5th Division Salvage Company with which he served out the remainder of the war. He returned to Australia on the Orita and disembarked at Melbourne on August 6th 1919.
