Biography

Alfred John Rowsell (SN 5213) was born in Ballarat where he attended the Urquhart Street State School. He was a bricklayer, 20 years old, and single when he enlisted on January 25th 1916. He joined the 8th Infantry Battalion and embarked for active service in early April on board the Suffolk. He was killed in action at Broodseinde on October 4th 1917, has no known grave, and is listed on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
