Biography

Rasmus Robinson Hansen (SN 941) was born in Melbourne and grew up there and in Bendigo. In his early 20s he moved to Ballarat and took up employment as a window dresser at Snows Emporium, and also became a member of the Central Ballarat Cricket Club. He enlisted in Ballarat on December 3rd 1914 and embarked from Australia in early February 1915 aboard the Clan Mcgillivray as a member of the 3rd Light Horse Regiment. The Gallipoli terrain was unsuitable for horses but some light horsemen, including Rasmus Hansen, were deployed there in May as stretcher bearers with the 3rd Light Horse Regiment Field Ambulance. He made several trips ferrying wounded to hospitals on the islands of Malta and Mudros before he was killed instantly by an exploding shell at Gallipoli on August 7th 1915. He was 26 years old and is buried in the 7th Field Ambulance Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
