Frederick John Wilson (SN 4249), a 22 year old coach builder from Lyons Street South, enlisted in Ballarat on July 26th 1915. He trained at Ballarat and Broadmeadows, joining 21st Battalion reinforcements, before embarking from Melbourne on March 7th 1916 on the Wiltshire. He reached Egypt in April, transferred to the 5th Pioneer Battalion and moved to France in June. On January 19th 1917 he was wounded in action. He sustained a gunshot wound to his right buttock and was evacuated to the 1st London General Hospital. He was returned to Australia on the Ulysses, disembarked in Melbourne on November 13th 1917 and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ soon after.
He died on January 2nd 1951 at the age of 58.
