Born in Ballarat, Stanley Magrath was a single 22 year old clerk when he enlisted in Melbourne, Victoria on the 10th of September 1914. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A26 Armadale on the 20th of October 1914.
Stanley returned to Australia on the 25th of December 1918, and was discharged due to the termination of his enlistment period on the 23rd of February 1919.
