Biography

Herbert Granland (SN 14555) was born in Ballarat where he attended the Redan State School. He was a 22 year old, unmarried telephone mechanic when he enlisted on July 8th 1915. It wasn’t until August 1916 that he embarked from Australia on board the Miltiades to serve with the 46th Infantry Battalion. On April 11th 1917 he was killed in action at Bullecourt. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.

His brothers Alfred and William also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
