Joseph Thomas Rosendale was born in Daylesford, Victoria, was married to Mrs. Isabella E Rosendale of Drummond Street, Ballarat, Victoria and was an Ironworker when he enlisted in the 8th Battalion, A Company on 25 August 1914 at the age of 32. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A24 Benalla on 19 October 1914. His tour, however, was brief; in August 1914 he was diagnosed with rheumatism and diarrhoea. In October 1915 he was hospitalised for lung trouble and dysentery. On June 24 1916 he was diagnosed with acute mastoiditis and was invalided for home service in Australia, receiving a medical discharge from service on 5 September 1916.
