Biography

Joseph Francis Ryan was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Moulder when he enlisted in the 8th Battalion, 16th Reinforcement on 21 February 1916 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A23 Suffolk on 1 April 1916. Unfortunately his tour was brief, having suffered from ventricle disease and was discharged back to Australia on 10 February 1916.

His brother, Pte John Henry Ryan of the 58th Bn also served.
