Biography

William Horne Barrett (SN 802) was born in Ballarat and educated at Humffray Street State School, Ballarat High School and Ballarat Grammar. He was a 21-year-old farmer when he enlisted in the 39th Infantry Battalion on February 4th 1916. On May 27th he embarked aboard the Ascanius and eventually reached France in November. Sergeant Barrett was killed in the confused fighting at Broodseinde Ridge on 4th October 1917. He was 23 years of age. His body was never recovered, and his name was included on the Menin Gate Memorial, at Ypres in Belgium and on the honour boards of his three local schools.
