Biography

Geoffrey Eustace Surman was born in Cardigan, VIC and was a Farmer by trade when he enlisted in the 8th Battalion, A Company on 25 August 1914 at the age of 33. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A24 Benalla on 19 October 1914. On October 19th he embarked from Melbourne on the Benalla. He was involved in the Gallipoli landing on April 25th but the following day was wounded. He suffered æconcussion of the spine' and bruising to his back and was evacuated to hospital where it was determined he should return to Australia. He returned home on the Hororata in July 1915 then in January 1916 he was appointed to the role of Recruiting Sergeant for the Shire of Bellarine.
