Robert Bruce Stephens was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Farmer when he enlisted with the 57th Battalion, 2nd Reinforcement on 7 February 1916 at the age of 28. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A14 Euripides on 4 April 1916. He was wounded in action in the field in France with a gunshot wound to the face and was evacuated to hospital on 1 September 1916. The wound, while not fatal, proved sever enough to warrant a medical discharge. He returned home aboard the 'A33' from England on 23 May 1917.
