Edward Patrick Deery (SN 2621) had already served in the Boer War when, as a married 43 year old baker with three children, he enlisted at Geelong on February 7th 1916. He embarked aboard the Anchises on March 14th and in June he reached France to serve with the 29th Infantry Battalion. His active service was hampered by rheumatism, and he was returned to Australia aboard the Runic and discharged on August 25th 1917 ‘medically unfit, senility’.
