William Thomas Finn (SN 1821) born at Kilmore, was a 26 year old car painter when he enlisted in Melbourne on February 7th 1916. On August 16th he embarked aboard the Orontes and in November he reached France to serve with the 39th Infantry Battalion. During his service he was transferred for six months to the 3rd Division Salvage Company and was three times charged with being absent without leave. He avoided major wounds or illness and returned to Australia on the Derbyshire, disembarked on April 22nd 1919 and was discharged on May 30th. Three months later he joined the Permanent Forces when he enlisted with the Royal Australian Garrison Artillery at Queenscliff.
