Biography

John Nicholas Phillips was born in Dungiven, Ireland and was a Clerk living in Ballarat when he enlisted in the 29th Battalion, 5th Reinforcement on 9 February 1916 at the age of 39. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A68 Anchises on 14 March 1916. He was transferred to England as wounded in the field on 3 November 1916 with a gunshot wound to the skull and right thigh. On 10 January 1917 he was furlough for two weeks, until the 25th. On 11 May 1917 he was admitted to hospital suffering bronchitis and asthma. He left England and returned to Australia aboard the Anchises, receiving a medical discharge on 4 February 1918.
