Biography

Born in Ballarat, David Mackay was a single 21 year old labourer at the time of his enlistment in Melbourne, Victoria, on the 9th of February 1916. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on the 27th of May 1916.
On the 30th of March 1917, David was promoted to Lance Corporal.
He was wounded in action on the 7th of June 1917, and was invalided to England and admitted to the 1st Southern General Hospital in Birmingham, England on the 22nd of June 1917 with a shell wound to his back. He rejoined his battalion on the 29th of January 1918.
On the 17th of July 1919 he reverted to the rank of Private.
David returned to Australia on the 18th of July 1919 and was discharged in Victoria.
