Biography

Cornelius Harold Toll was born in Rocklyn, VIC and was a Labourer from Ballarat when he enlisted in the 29th Battalion, B Company on 30 August 1915 at the age of 20. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 10 November 1915. In June 1916 he sailed on to France. He avoided physical injury, but in mid-1917 then in August 1918, illness forced him to hospital for extended periods. In November 1918, just a couple of days before the Armistice was signed, he was transferred from the 29th to the 58th Battalion. He returned to Australia on the Orsova and disembarked at Melbourne on February 27th 1919.
