Richard Rrandal Toll was born in Rocky Lead, Victoria, was single and a Labourer when he enlisted with the 29th Battalion, 5th Reinforcement on February 1916 at the age of 36. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A68 Anchises on 14 March 1916. Due to a series of illnesses resulting in hospital stays (Trench Fever), his term of service was relatively brief and he returned to Australia 8 April 1917.
