Herbert Leslie Hughes (SN 1676) was born in Sebastopol and was a 24 year old grocer, married to Jessie, when he enlisted on February 12th 1916. He was drafted to the 58th Infantry Battalion and sailed from Australia in May on board the Port Lincoln for service in France. On March 27th 1918 he was killed in action by long distance shelling by the advancing Germans. He was buried in the St. Pol British Cemetery, France.
His younger brother Victor was killed in action three weeks after Herbert and is also honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
