Biography

John Williams Wearmouth (SN 248) was born in Clunes but grew up and was educated at Sebastopol. He was an 18 year old painter when he enlisted in Ballarat on February 14th 1916. Assigned to the 39th Infantry Battalion, he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Ascanius in May and sailed to England. In November of 1916 he joined his unit in France. On October 12th 1917 he was killed in action near Passchendaele. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres in Belgium.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as John W. Wearmonth.
